New Delhi: Chief Minister of Delhi Arvind Kejriwal inaugurated the first smog tower in India’s capital Delhi’s Connaught Place on today (Monday) (23/08/2021), established with the main focus and aim to improve the quality of air within the radius of 1 km around the smog tower.
On speaking about this project, Chief Minister of Delhi said that the tower has been set up as a passive mode i.e. pilot project and within a month initial trends will be available. If the pilot project will get successful, then more smog tower will be established & installed in the national capital & will decide to circulate all over the country (the smog tower). It will take some time.
All About The Smog Tower
1000 cubic metres of air per second will be purified by the smog tower established within a radius of around 1 km and it will also reduce the PM 2.5, PM 10 levels in Delhi. A control room has been set up at the site to monitor all the operations and functions of the smog tower in the main capital.
The budget for this project is 20 crore, has been funded by the Delhi government. It was approved by the Delhi Cabinet as a passive project i.e. pilot project in the month October previous/last year, but it got delayed due to the Corona-virus/Covid-19 pandemic.
To check the effectiveness of the smog towers a two-year pilot study will be undertaken after it becomes operational. The performance and quality generated by the smog tower will be created by the professionals & experts those who will create and submit a brief report to the government of Delhi regarding which will establish similar towers throughout the country along with the capital Delhi, if the performance is impressive.
Thereafter, another towers of height 25-metre-tall tower is being established and built by the central government at Anand Vihar, which might become functional /operational by the end month of August. Both the structures are being built by Tata Projects Limited (TPL) with technical support from IIT-Bombay, which in collaboration with IIT-Delhi, they will validate their performance and create the report for the tower’s performance.
According to the reports received, both the towers will use at-least 1,200 air filters each and this will developed by the experts at the University of Minnesota in the USA (United States). They are estimated to reduce the concentration of PM 2.5 up to 70 per cent in the radius of approx 1 km of above maybe less sometime, after getting reports then we can say the estimated range of the smog tower and the performance generated by them.
